Coach Todd’s Liberty 12U Blue team is advancing to 14U this fall. But, they completed a great 2017-2018 campaign and won the PONY Nationals Championship! Here is a quick recap of the team’s fall and spring seasons:
Fall 2017 Record: 29-5-1
Spring 2018 Record: 51-6
Complete Record: 80-11-1
The Liberty Blue 12U team capped off a remarkable season by winning the PONY Nationals Bronco Championship. The team did not have to travel for for this event, which was held at Claude Moore Park and Potomac Lakes Sportsplex in Sterling, VA. They made the most of their time, sweeping in group play and going 2-0 in bracket play. When it came to Championship day everything was on the line, with a single-elimination 8 team battle. Liberty handled the first two games easily, but in the finals PA Banshees Red would not go down without a fight. In the third meeting of these two teams in this tournaments, the game stayed closed. Liberty prevailed, however, with a 4-1 victory and the champion’s trophy. Congratulations!
See highlights from the championship game, as well as an interview with Coach Todd below:
12U Blue stayed local to participate in the Loudoun Firecracker. After going 3-0 in pool play Saturday, the girls faced a tough opponent in the Sunday semifinals, but prevailed 2-1. The championship game was a different matter altogether as Blue exploded for a 12-0 victory. Overall the team was 6-0, scoring 46 runs and allowing 9.
Liberty Blue traveled east for the 12U Open “Blast at the Beach” tournament in Ocean City, MD. They were among 35 teams from MD, VA, DE, PA, NJ and NY. After pool play Liberty was 4-0 and standing at 3rd place in the rankings, just out of reach of a first-round bye.
The path to a championship would take four more wins, including games against the #2 and #1 seeds. They did it in style, including a 4-3 semifinals victory via International Tie-Breaker (ITB) over #2 NJ Renegades 12U Gold. In the end, they defeated #1 seed Delaware Vipers 10-4 in a championship game where Liberty jumped out with 4 runs in the top of the 1st inning and never ceded the lead throughout the 7 inning game. A great way to kick off the summer!
The Liberty 12U Blue battled the weather and top notch opponents to take 3rd place out of a field of 42 teams from eight states in the three-day Memorial Day Madness Tournament.
What was supposed to be a three game opening round on Saturday turned into a single game after rain forced the suspension of Game 2 with Liberty up 4-0 in the top of the 4th inning and one out away from a regulation game. On Sunday, all three games were completed including the second game which was played in a steady downpour at times. Despite the abbreviated schedule Liberty managed to make the top 16 and the Gold Bracket Championship round. There they won two games before falling in the semi-finals 6-4. Great job under trying conditions!
Although the weather didn’t cooperate, Liberty 12U Blue prevailed in an abbreviated Military Appreciation Tournament. Competing in the 14U B category they went 2-1 to capture the tournament championship. What a great way to end the fall season!
